The inheritance of genes controlling semi-dwarfism and the dwarf habit of the Profuse Tillering Dwarf was studied in a cross between Baok, a tall variety and the dwarf mutant. Dwarf habit of the mutant was controlled by a recessive gene. The semi-dwarf habit was found to be controlled by another recessive gene present in the tall variety Baok. The tall stature of Baok, despite the presence of a recessive gene for semi-dwarf habit, was due to the presence of a dominant gene for tallness in Baok. The practical utility of the dwarfs in rice improvement programmes is discussed.
