Preliminary studies with selected representative cultivars from the genetic stock collection for panicle and grain characters were undertaken to provide information on the future possibilities of improvement in the present new high yielding varieties. Data were collected for nine characters. Character association indicated that primary and secondary branches had negative association with grain parameters. Variation in 100 grain weight was marked. It was observed that some of the medium, fine grain varieties had test weight similar to or more than long, fine grain types. Significance of 100 grain weight and other grain characteristics in the improvement of the new high yielding varieties is discussed. It is suggested that future yield increase might be achieved through improvement in panicle characters.
