All India Co-ordinated Sorghum Improvement Project, IARI Regional Research Station, Hyderabad

Selected derivatives from exotic × Indian crosses which are relatively dwarf and earlier in maturity when used as male parents yielded hybrids superior in grain yield and seed weight compared to those resulting from IS 84, the male parent of CSH-1, the first and most widely cultivated commercial sorghum hybrid in India. Derivatives from a rabi (winter) variety and from compact panicle types resulted in superior hybrids when compared to those derived from kharif (monsoon) or elongated panicle types. Corresponding improvement of females, which is currently in progress, is expected to result in further hybrid improvement
