The inheritance of seedling base colour is governed by 3 genes C, I and S, C, the basic factor, is necessary for colour production, I, the inhibitor, suppresses the expression of C, and S, the anti-inhibitor, suppresses the action of I on C. Style colour showed a monogenic inheritance. A study of joint segregation of the two traits revealed that the colour factor C is common (pleiotropic) for both the characters.
