Abstract

The dwarf and normal versions of five inbred lines and four single crosses of maize were grown at two nitrogen levels in split-plot design to study the effect of in-corporation of brachytic-2 gene. It was observed that the dwarf version, averaged over all the genotypes, had more ear length and thousand kernel weight,]ess plant height in both the experiments and more yield, ear diameter and leaf area in experiment I (150 kg. N/ha). There were no significant differences with respect to other characters. It was also observed that the effect brought about by the incorporation of br-2 gene was variable in different genetic backgrounds. This suggests that high yield and high degree of lodging resistance could be combined by in-corporating br-2 gene into suitable genetic backgrounds.
