The inheritance of zebra banding pattern and dwarf nature in a X-ray mutant (R. 1–79) from Saturn and the inter-relationship of gene was studied in a cross between this mutant and a purple leaved normal variety (JBS. 1454) from Jeypore Botanical Survey (JBS) collection. A single recessive gene controlled the expression of these two characters individually.
The banding pattern was due to dilution of the different pigments to varying degree at regular intervals in the leaf blade. It was inferred that different recessive genes were involved in this process.
The gene for the dwarf habit has been tentatively assigned to group 2. This gene was linked to one of the genes for purple colour of the apiculus (cross over value 34.8 per cent) and a gene for purple colouration in the leaf blade (cross over value 25.3 per cent).
