A series of experiments were conducted at the Research Farm of the Department of Agronomy, B. H. U., Varanasi during 1970–71 to 1973–74 to find out the prospects of growing pulses under multiple cropping under irrigated as well as unirrigated conditions and as intercrop in arhar. The results obtained are summarised as under:
1. Moong was the best crop giving higher net return than rice, cowpea and cheena under a highly intensive rotation at Varanasi region.
2. Pulses were found to be superior as a summer crop in respect of the residual response exerted on the next kharif rice and wheat crops.
3. Gram was the best rabi crop after kharif rice under unirrigated conditions.
4. Bajra in kharif and gram in rabi were the suitable crops under unirri-gated conditions while barley did well after urd in kharif.
5. Urd was the best inter-crop with arhar as main crop.
