Combining ability analysis was made in cowpea through 6 × 6 diallel crosses. General combining ability variance was found more important than specific combining ability variance in the inheritance of all the characters under study. The parent 5226 B-42 was found the best general combiner. The cross 5715 × 5226 B-42 exhibited the best specific combining ability. Progeny selection technique was suggested for exploiting additive genetic variance controlling the expression of the characters in 5226 B-42.
