Abstract

Three varieties of G. hirsutum and one of G. barbadense were chosen. Emasculated flowers were pollinated with gamma irradiated pollen. The dose range was 0.5–7.5 kR. Irradiated pollen reduced boll set and percentage of filled seeds and increased the percentage of empty seeds and motes. There was no varietal difference in pollen radiosensitivity. G. barbadense appeared do be more sensitive. Based on the data collected a dose range of 0.5 to 1.0 kR of gamma rays is recommended for cotton pollen irradiation.
