Abstract

The present paper was designed to compare between the significance of mutations reported in a previous paper (1970) with that which were obtained in the present one using Kastenbaum and Bowman's Tables (1970). That previous paper had been carried out in order to determine the genetic background effects on spontaneous and nitrous acid-induced Schizosaccharomyces pombe mutants isolated following inositol starvation. Significance for comparisons between percentages of mutants were carried out by determining the standard error of the differences and using the normal curve functions Table.

The present results showed that there is consistence between the two methods of significance for the majority of the cases. However, two cases favoured the method of the standard error of the differences and one favoured using the Tables. Therefore, it was concluded that the two methods can support each other.
