Abstract

Thirty strains of Panicum miliare Lam. were studied for phenotypic and genotypic correlations and path-coefficient analysis. Grain yield showed positive correlation with days to maturity, number of tillers, number of panicles, length of panicle and yield of straw. Path-coefficient analysis showed that number of panicles per plant had the highest positive direct effect on grain yield, followed successively by 100-grain weight, length of panicle and days to maturity. The regression of grain yield on number of panicles per plant and 100-grain weight was significant. It was concluded that improvement in grain yield in Panicum miliare is possible through selection for number of panicles per plant and 100-grain weight.
