*Paper presented in all India rabi pulse workshop held at APAU, Hyderabad (29th September to 1st October, 1975).
The relationship of six growth characters with three yield attributes were studied in 50 diverse genotypes of gram under three dates of planting. Short-statured genotypes recorded higher seed yields and harvest index but smaller seed size. Genotypes having shorter internodes were found to posses smaller seed index but higher harvest index. Under late planting early types were found advantageous. The study brings out the importance of characters like short stature and podding at lower height in the improvement of this pulse crop. Genotypes possessing these growth characters would be higher yielders as well as be possessing better harvest index. Such genotypes combined with early maturity would be suitable for getting higher yields per unit area and time.
