The present paper considers the mechanism of lodging of wheat and barley plants, based on the analysis of culm strength and lodging phenomenon on the standpoint of physical characteristics of culms. The parameters showing physical characteristics of culms are shown with the methods used to measure them.
It was ascertained that there was a distinct difference in the quality of culm strength between wheat and barley. Culm-supporting power depended both on the roots and the frictional resistance between culm and soils. According to the results, culm strength and lodging phenomenon were dynamically analysed. The energy-balance at the critical-point of lodging was calculated practically.
