Cultivation systems of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L) Millsp) were studied in 43 districts of Madhya Pradesh to relate the variation in cultivar adaptations to systems. Seven broad categories of cropping systems were identified, important ones being, sole, inter and mixed cropping, mixed-cum-inter cropping, bund cultivation and shifting cultivation. The regions of adaptations with reference to agro-ecological conditions were demarcated. Study of over 900 cultivars revealed 9 distinct plant and maturity types as adapted to different cropping systems and were described. Minor variations within each group also existed.
