Abstract

The effect of radiation (X-rays) and diethyl sulphate on the seed fertility of an indica variety of rice was studied. With the treatments with 15 kR X-rays and DES the seed fertility was reduced to 50.5 and 54-8 per cent, respectively.

The inheritance pattern of the induced sterility was studied upto M3 generation. This suggests that a large portion of DES—induced sterility is of diplontic nature and the heritable changes occur in the nucleus rather than in the cytoplasm.
