In the context of the present day farming systems, the requirement, production and utilization of green fodder and crop residues during different seasons for increased animal production are examined to define the breeding objectives for their improvement. Forage evaluation and selection techniques and the future research strategies for the genetic improvement of forage plants are also briefly discussed.
