Rice bean (Phaseolus calcaraties Roxb.) is shown to have several advantages as a forage and the need for developing early maturing varieties is pointed out. The use of interspecific crosses for transfering desirable characters such as non-shattering as well as for the production of allopolypeoids for direct utilisation as fodder crops is considered.
