Abstract

Promising hybrids, varieties and new selections were sown during 1972 to 1975. Hybrids have shown an increase from 74 to 111% for green fodder yield and from 63 to 202% for dry matter content as compared to control. But such an increase was not noticed in F2 and F3 generations of these crosses. On the other hand, improvement to the extent of 50% could be brought about in recent years through direct selections from the world germplasm of sorghum. Also improvement in yield to the extent of 80% was obtained through hybridization and selection. In the present paper, the question of hybrids vs varieties in forage sorghum has been discussed keeping in consideration our own local conditions.
