Seeds of S. nigrum were collected from India and France and grown under as uniform experimental conditions as possible. They were found to differ significantly in growth habit; the Indian hexaploids were tall and erect whereas the French hexaploids were short and prostrate with spreading branches. On the basis of their heritable morphological difference and their ready crossability with each other producing fertile hybrids (n=36) with mostly normal meiosis, it is suggested that they should be recognized as ecotypes or sub-species of S. nigrum..
