Combining ability for yield and five contributing traits in soybean (Glycine max L. Merril) was studied in a 7 × 7 diallel mating design during kharif 1974. Parents ‘PLSO 17’, ‘Lee’ and ‘Bragg’ were found to be good general combiners when four to six traits were considered at a time. On the basis of boths.c.a. effects and the natureof gene action involved in the expression of yield and its component traits, ‘TI’ × ‘PLSO 17’ and ‘JS-2’ × ‘UPSS 38’ appeared to be most promising for exploitation in future breeding programmes.
