Abstract

Morphological and cytological characters of Solarium nodiflorum Jacq. (n = 12) and French hexaploid S. nigrum Linn. (n = 36) have been studied. The lack of close genetic relationship between the two species is shown by cytological study of their sterile F1 hybrid (n=24). It has been Concluded that polyploidy, structural hybridity and genie differences between the genomes of S. nodiflorum and French hexaploid S. nigrum have played an important role in reproductive isolation and morphological distinctiveness of the two taxa.
