Association between anatomical features and various types of flood resistance was assessed in 100 varieties of rice belonging to different ecological categories. Varieties highly resistant to intermittent flooding were found to have thick sclerenchymatous hypodermis, lignified cells, profuse starch granules, additional sclerenchymatous band and vascular bundles. Varieties tolerant to deep water stagnant flooding had no anatomical peculiarities except larger volume of aerenchyma. Thus, the varieties resistant to intermittent flooding could be screened on the basis of anatomical features.
