Abstract

The ms lines based on exotic material (milo cytoplasm) were the susceptible to shootfly while the Indian ms lines VZM 2 A (durra cytoplasm) was resistant. It was also a good combiner giving low oviposition and dead heart (%). Among the males, IS 4714, IS 5490 and IS 5566 contributed favourable genes for shootfly resistance. Hybrids involving resistant or moderately resistant parents were highly resistant. Therefore, while breeding for shootfly resistance dwarf female parents having some degree of resistance should be combined with Indian tall local resistant parents.
