Inheritance of anthocyanin pigmentation of auricle, stem and ring at the base of rachis in eight intra- and inter-specific crosses of tetraploid wheats has been studied. Monogenic control of anthocyanin pigmentation has been observed for the three characters except for auricle colour in two combinations, MACS–3 × Mx 0⋅5 and M × 0⋅5 × Langdon, where operation of two pairs of dominant genes have been noticed. Comparison of the genetic behavour of these characters revealed a relative constancy in the genetic constitution of pigmentation genes both at tetraploid and hexaploid levels.
