Abstract

The investigation was undertaken to study the nature and magnitude of gene effects and genetic variances for four quality characters in wheat. Diallel F1 and F2 progenies of untreated and EMS (0⋅4%) treated diverse five spring bread wheat cultivars viz., NP 876, Norteno M67, Kalyan Sona, S331 and Moti were studied.

Both additive and non-additive genetic variances were important in the inheritance of the traits under study. Magnitude of the additive component increased in the EMS-treated populations for all the characters, suggesting the possibility of inducing favourable additive effects for important quality characters.
