The results in this experiment indicate a differential response of maize cytoplasms to injury caused by butylate. Some cytoplasms have more tolerance to butylate than others. Other things being equal, those cytoplasms with the greater tolerance should be more useful than those with the lesser tolerance in breeding and farm herbicidal programmes. These results have implications for future research & suggest a new dimension in breeding plants for tolerance to herbicides, i.e., a consideration not only of the genotype but also of the cytoplasm.
