‘Ribbon’, a male sterile line, was crossed with inbred lines, ‘D red 154’, ‘JRC 321’, ‘Fanduk’, ‘Mogra’ and Tripura’. All the F1 hybrids produced superior Length: Breadth ratio of the ultimate fibre cells compared to the respective pollen parents. However, hybrids involving cultivars ‘D 154’, ‘JRC 321’ and ‘Fanduk’, only were significantly superior.
The absolute breadth of U.F.C. exhibited an inverse relation with the L:B values, and the latter character maintained an ascending pattern from the base to the top region of individual plants. Plant height and base diameter did not exhibit any relation with the L:B values.
