Abstract

Two hundred and sixty eight strains of urdbean (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) were studied at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana for different traits viz., days to flowering, plant height, number of branches, clusters and pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, seed weight, grain yield and protein content. Sufficient variation was observed for all the characters in this material. Positive association was shown between grain yield and clusters per plant, pods per plant, pod length and seeds per pod, whereas days to flowering and number of branches showed negative association with grain yield. Grain protein was negatively associated with grain yield, seed per pod, pod length, number of clusters and pods per plant. Partial regression analysis showed pods per plant was best selection criterion for grain yield and pod length was the best indicator for protein content. However, clusters per plant and seeds per pod were also important characters in scoring for yield.
