The present investigation was carried out at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, during winter 1974–75. The experimental material used in the study was 15 parents and 45 crosses (5=6) excluding reciprocals among these parents. Additive nature of gene action was observed for 250 grain weight and non-additive for days to flower, plant height, total number of branches per plant, days to reproductive phase, days to maturity and number of pods per plant in the expression of the traits. Parent ‘Chaffa’ for days to flower and days to reproductive phase; ‘T1’ for plant height; ‘Gwaliar 2’ for total number of branches per plant and number of pods per plant; ‘P 1161’ for days to maturity; ‘P 864’ for grain yield per plant and T 3’ for 250 grain weight were found best general combiners. Narrow sense heritability estimates were high to medium for days to flower, days to reproductive phase and 250 grain weight, whereas low for plant height, total number of branches per plant and days to maturity.
