Data has been presented above, whereby it is shown that when compared to analogous normal maize, the presence of opaque-2 (o3) gene in the recessive homozygous condition reduces the duration of protandry, in general, by about 30%. This reduction in protandry was not, in anyway, correlated with the observed reduction in grain yield, nor was there any correlation between the parents and the progeny for the duration of protandry in the o2 or normal maize or the shortening of protandry by the o2 gene.
