The phenomenon of tolerance to black and brown rusts of wheat was studied in 3 susceptible varieties, ‘Agra Local’, ‘A-206’ and ‘Kalyansona’ and a resistant variety ‘Chhotilerma’. Field trials were conducted during rabi 1973 to 1975 under medium fertility irrigated conditions in randomised block design with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The trial was inoculated with as many existing races of black and brown rusts as could be obtained to create artificial epiphytotics. The cultivar ‘Kalyansona’ exhibited tolerance to black and brown rusts, as the losses are only one third in comparison with other susceptible cultivars like ‘Agra Local’ and ‘A-206’. ‘Chhotilerma’ showed minimum losses in yield irrespective of the time of rust inoculation.
