Five crosses including two inter-dwarf crosses were studied for the inheritance of genes governing dwarf habit, anthocyanin pigmentation in leaf blade and inter-relationship of genes governing these characters. Dwarf habit was governed by a single recessive gene in cross involving profuse tillering dwarf (CRRI dwarf) and normal parent CP 12. In cross involving T 1064 dwarf and normal parents CP 12 and CH 17 three recessive genes were involved in the expression of dwarf habit. The inheritance studies on the inter dwarf crosses involving CRRI Dwarf and T 1064 and T 432 dwarf indicate that one recessive gene is common in the dwarfs, Profuse Tillering, T 1064 and T 432, the other genes being different in T 1064. A new dwarf possessing three recessive genes was identified due to the complementary action of all the recessive genes. A cross over value of 32⋅3 per cent was obtained between the gene governing dwarf habit in profuse tillering dwarf and one of the genes governing purple leaf blade colour.
