The effects of gamma radiation on three species of Vigna were studied in M1, M2 and M3 generations. The germination of seeds, seedling urvival and growth rate decreased with an increase in dose level. In M2 generation, various types of chlorophyll mutations were observed. At maturity many viable morphological mutations were isolated. The mutants ‘bushy’ mutant of V. trilobata and ‘pyramid’ shaped mutant of V. aconitifolia were found to be useful mutants for further study.
The mutagenic effectiveness increased with an increase in dose level in all the species. The mutagenic efficiency increased similarly with an increase of dose level in V. radiata alone.
