A developmental mutant modifying the normal orientation of the embryo in maize kernels in relation to the ear shoot was obtained in a mutagenesis study. Several or all of the kernels in a mutant ear are so oriented that the embryo faces the stalk end as opposed to the tip end in normal cobs. Inheritance of this trait and possible mechanisms for reversal of the germ orientation are discussed.
