Abstract

The present studies were carried out on 1000-grain weight, protein content and sedimentation values in a 10-parent diallel cross of wheat (without reciprocals). It was concluded from the data on 1000-grain weight that a high proportion of genetic variation was additive but the non-additive component was even greater. The varieties ‘Hira’, ‘Lerma Rojo’ and ‘K-227’ appeared to be major sources of non-allelic interaction for this character. The gene action for protein content was primarily non-additive. The varieties ‘Hira’, ‘Lerma Rojo’ and TV 18’ were detected as the sources of high non-allelic interaction for this character. The estimate of mean square due to GCA for sedimentation value was 300 per cent of the corresponding SCA estimate. Only ‘NP 809’ seemed to be contributing to non-additive genetic variation for this character. Implications of the genetic analysis in utilization of the material for breeding purposes have been discussed.
