Abstract

Inheritance of scent was worked out in crosses involving four tall scented varieties and two dwarf non-scented high yielding varieties. The investigations were made during kharif, 1976 on four crosses, viz., ‘Sons × Basmati 370% ‘Jaya × HR 47’, ‘Jaya X HR 59’and ‘Jaya × HR 22’. The presence or absence of scent on individual plant basis in F1 and F2 was studied through leaf analysis in hot water at tillering stage.

The hybrids of all the four crosses manifested scented character. The F2 pattern of segregation for scent to non-scent was 27 : 37 indicating thereby that three dominant complementary genesare acting simultaneously for the expression of aroma in all the crosses.
