Abstract

A 7 × 7 diallel was attempted in bengal gram and data on yield and its eight components were recorded. Nature of genetic control for these characters was studied using diallel analysis following Griffing’s (1956 b) and Gardner and Eberhart (1966).

The genetic control for yield and its primary components was both additive and non-additive in nature. For days to 50% flowering and days to maturity, the genetic control was mostly additive.

Significant heterosis for single plant yield over the better parents and/or best parent was recorded in six crosses. The nature of heterosis was examined in light of information on gene action available from diallel analysis.
