Seed permeability (measured by soaking seeds of parental, F1 and F2 populations for 48 hours) is governed by a single gene pair in two interspecific crosses (‘VPSM—534’ x G. formosono and ‘Hardee’ x G. formoscma) with impermeability being dominant. In an intervarietal cross (‘Bragg’ x ‘Bragg Black seed’) permeability is dominant over impermeability. This cross also revealed linkage between seed coat colour and seed impermeability, most of the yellow seeds being permeable and black seeds impermeable to water.
