Abstract

During the course of transfer of resistance to yellow-vein mosaic from A. tetraphyllus (n=69) to cultivated okra (A. esculemus n=65) sterility of the hybrid was overcome by inducing amphidi-ploidy. The chromosome pairing in the amphidiploid was normal with 129–134 II/cell as against only 22–40 II/cell in the F1. Some abnormalities in the amphidiploid at telophase II were observed such as dyads, triads, and polyads. The abnormalities observed in respect of spore formation seem to be a result of disharmony between the parental sets of chromosomes.
