Three species of Crassocephalmn are described. C. rubens and C. sarcobasis are diploids with 2n = 20 while C. crepidioidts is a tctraploid with 2a=40. The close morphological relationship of the two diploid species is supported by the karyological studies. It was deduced from hybridisation trials that the diploid species are not likely to be concerned in the origin of the tetraplcid and this fact is supported by karyological studies. The tctraploid had hardly any quadrivalents at diakinesis and is therefore assumed to be an aliotetraploid.
