Abstract

The present investigations were undertaken on a diallel cross of eleven varieties of wheat grown over three environments for grain yield and it3 components, tillers/plant, grains/ear and seed seze. Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the progenies for all the characters. Combining ability analysis showed that mean squares due to general and specific combining ability were highly significant, the former being much larger in magnitude than the latter. However, the ratio. s2gca/s2sca was less than unity in all the cases. For number of tillers per plant ‘Sonalika’ and ‘HD 1981’ were better general combiners. For number of grains ‘WL 410’, ‘UP 368’ and ‘WG 357’ were better combiners. For seed size ‘WL 711’ and ‘HD 2009’ were good combineis whereas for grain yield ‘HD 1981’ and ‘VVL 410’ proved to be better combiners.

There was inconsistency for the specific combining ability of the crosses.
