Abstract

A desynaptic mutant was isolated from Ma generation of the gamma-irradiated seeds of safflower Carthamus tinctorius L. At pachytene, chromosomes paired but at metaphase I, univalents (ranging from 12 to 24) were observed. Average number of univalents and bivalents was 20-7 and 1–6 per cell, respectively, Bivalents were rod shaped. Unequal separation and lagging of chromosomes were the main abnormalities at anaphase I. The mutant was highly male sterile but produced a few seeds.
