Abstract

The present studies were carried out to find out nature of genetic diversity of nine crosses of ‘HD 2009’, ‘HD 2177’ and ‘HD 2189’ with ‘Tezano Pintos Precoz’, ‘Marco Juarez Inta’ and ‘E 8643’, for black and brown rust resistance.

The resistance of ‘HD 2009’ to black rust was different from TzPP. Its recessive factor was common with ‘HD 2189 and complementary factors common with ‘MJI’ and ‘E 8643’. Resistance of ‘HD 2177’ was not common with the three varieties. Similarly resistance in ‘HD 2189’ showed diversity from the three varieties. Brown rust resistance of all three varieties ‘HD 2009’, ‘HD 2177’ and ‘HD 2189’ was, due to different factors than those in ‘TzPP’, ‘MJI’ and ‘E 8643’. Because of such diversity of genes it should be possible to pyramid and combine genes into new cultivars to provide sustained resistance.
