Abstract

Almost all of the 31 selection indices constructed except a few showed better efficiency than the straight selection for grain yield alone. An index involving all the five variables viz1., number of spikelets/main spike, number of grains/main spike, grain yield/main spike, number of tillers/plant and 250-grain weight exhibited maximum relative efficiency of 185.9 per cent. However, some of the 2-variable, 3-variable and 4-variable indices were also equally good.
