Abstract

Inheritance studies of qualitative characters in rice showed the existence of definite pattern in the pigment distribution of various plant parts. The presence of pigment in one plant parts was associated with the presence of pigment in other part or parts and vice versa. This close association of pigmented characters is attributed to pleiotropy or to close linkage of genes. If the character association is solely due to pleiotropy, crossovers do not occur, where the concerned characters are governed by single genes. The phenomenon of pleiotropy can also be detected, where some crossovers do occur, but here characters concerned are invariably governed by two or more factor pairs.
