Abstract

An analysis of 32 hybrids involving four varieties of G. hirsutum and eight varieties of G. barbadense as testers in a line × tester mating design revealed that among female parents, American nectariless and K 3400 and among the male parents, SB 289E and SB 1085-6, were the best general combiners for seed cotton yield. American nectariless is an American upland variety and K 3400 is a Russian type. Both the male parents are of Russian origin and are short branch types. The hybrid, Gujarat 67×Suvin, showed the highest and positive specific combining ability effect.
