The genomes of nineteen inbred lines of pearl millet were transferred into a1, A2 and A3 sources of cytoplasmic male sterility by repeated backcrossing. Nineteen alloplasmic lines thus produced were evaluated for the influence of different cytoplasmic sources on the phenotypic expression of four agronomic characters, viz. plant height, ear length, ear girth and tiller number. The genome of one inbred line, L-110 was simultaneously transferred to A1, A2, and a3 sources and the resultant alloplasmic combinations were compared with their fertile counter parts. The aa induced greater vegetative growth than a, or a, cytoplasms. The results provide evidence for the influence of. cytoplasmic factors on the 5 phcnotypic expression of nuclear genes.
