Abstract

A x-ray induced morphological mutant of Beta palanga, isolated in M2 generation, was analysed. The mutant had thick glossy leaves, big flowers (perianth) and big seeds (including persistent perianth covering) against thin leaves, small flowers (perianth) and small seeds (including persistent perianth covering) in the control. Abundant cube-chaped epicuticular wax on the adaxial surfaces of leaves further characterised the mutant from the control, which had scanty wax deposition and the crystals lacked in definable structure. The mutant characteristics were established to be genetically recessive the inheritance was controlled by a single pair of genes, designated ee'.
