Abstract

Combining ability was worked out for flag leaf area, synchrony of tillering, days to flowering, days to reproductive phase, plant height, length of spike, number of grains per spike, grain yield per spike, number of productive tillers, 1000-grain weight, biological yield, harvest index and economic yield per plant in breadwheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Both additive and non additive gene effects were important for the expression of the traits. Parents B 764 and HD 2204 were the best general combiners for yield, harvest index and other important traits. The high performing cross combinations, viz; B 764 × HD 2307, HD 2204 × HD 2307 and B 764 X B 45 involved at least one good combiner parent for yield as well as harvest index. The results have been discussed in relation to breeding methodologies in breadwheat.
