Abstract

A comparative study on the distribution of constitutive heterochromatin discernible by knobs, C- and Q-bands has been made in five established American races and nine representative collections of Sikkim primitive maize. It is indicated that the Sikkim Primitive types fall into two distinct lineages: one, with high knob/band number, represented by the strains S-18 and S-23 from Sikkim, T-1 and T-2 from Tripura, and N-3 and N-4 from Nagaland; and the other, with low knob/band number represented by M-l, M-15and M-25 from Meghalaya.
